Shadow's Path

As I walked along the shadowed path
To see where I had been

I wandered through the dark wood
Where nothing could be seen

And as I looked upon the ground
Scattered like ghastly leaves

Lay the bones of a forgotten soul
Strewn amongst the moss and trees

Memories rose and the fear did too
As I realized what they were

I could not turn my sight away
From the gaze that stared back at me

A gaping grin of a toothy skull
And ribs forlornly cast

But what caught my eye and made me still
Was a gold chain where the neck had been

Bending to get a better look
My blood froze in my veins

My mother's locket glinted wickedly up at me
Screaming, taunting, and I knew I'd never be the same.
